It sure seems that everywhere you turn that there is something promising lasting weight loss results.
This diet or this drink or some magic pill.
In fact, the other day while at the grocery store, I was waiting in line and just scanning the magazines that are up there for sale and there was this magazine that said “lose 25 pounds every single month!”
Girl, no. Stop the madness.
First of all, that kind of title makes promises that can’t be promised. You cannot promise/guarantee results let alone results that are so specific.
Did you know that according to Market Reasearch.com the weight loss market grew 4.1% in 2018? It went from $69.8B to $72.7B.
That’s BILLION. With a B!
The number is absolutely astronomimcal.
Here’s something else. Have you ever seen someone or even experienced yourself weight loss, and then turn around and within the year or a few months gain it all back?
It’s maddening, right?
How do you get results that actually stick and that you’re not going to be yo-yo dieting for the rest of your life?
Well, mama, the answer is straightforward and simple in theory, but it can be hard work to actually learn.
Here’s what I mean…
Learning your body after having a baby can be quite a frustrating process. I know for me, everything seemed off and my body awareness was almost completely gone.
So when I started my postpartum journey, I knew that I wanted lasting weight loss results. Not only that, I wanted to learn my body again and be able to listen to what it was telling me.
Very quickly, I realized that achieving fitness goals was going to be a process that was going to take real time and effort.
Because I was learning my baby and his needs and how to take care of him, as well as my new body and all the changes that I had gone through.
Which leads me into my tips that I have for mamas that are on a postpartum weight loss journey and achieving fitness goals.
Realize that achieving fitness goals will take time
First thing to realize is that achieving fitness goals will take time. For some, it will take lots of time. Did you know that it was 18 full months after my baby before I felt comfortable in my skin again?
18 months! That’s a long time.
Here’s another fun fact for you. My son is now over three and there are STILL times that I struggle with feeling comfortable in my skin.
Feeling confident in my skin requires daily steps that quite possibly will be for the rest of my life. I’m learning to embrace the journey of understanding that my body is beautiful and that I am unique.
Once we understand that the process takes time, it makes the other step actually fairly ‘simple’.
Achieving Fitness Goals – Small steps every single day
I’ve said it once, I’ve said it 100 times, and I’ll say it 1,000,000 more. Small steps, every single day will lead up to big results.
Lasting weight loss results comes from learning new habits.
That is the secret that everybody is looking for. Do these habits have to be drastic and mean that we only eat grilled chicken and kale?
New habits come from being mindful and making those small decisions every single day.
Because, here’s the deal. These small decisions build on each other and quite honestly becomes this snow ball effect.
You’ve seen those cartoons where they start out with this tiny snow ball and then they roll it down a hill and it becomes this bolder that crushes everything in sight?
Yep, this is what that is like.
You start out with this tiny snow ball of small healthy habits and then they naturally build on each other.
Such as deciding that you’re going to have a good breakfast with a good balance of macros.
That will typically lead into a solid decision of good lunch and getting out for a walk at lunch before you lie the kids down for a nap.
Then you feel really good about yourself and prepare a solid dinner for the family and drink some herbal tea or something before bed and you’re ready to get up the next morning for an early workout before everybody gets up.
See what I mean?
These decisions build on each other until you realize, hey, I’m living better and feeling better and wouldn’t you know it?
You’re not stress eating or feeling tired all the time, and hey, your clothes are fitting better!
Lasting weight loss results come from solid living habits.
Yes, the theory is truly that simple.
There is so much more science that goes into weight loss such as calorie deficit and reverse dieting, etc. But guess what? The application is still the same.
Small habits, and small changes everyday will lead to big results.
Do I recommend calorie counting? Absolutely. But if calorie counting stresses you out at first, then start with the simple things and work your way up to calorie counting when you’re ready.
Because, you’ll realize very quickly that calorie counting isn’t difficult and can be quite freeing.
And workouts? Keep them simple as well. What I mean is, don’t try to be fancy with your workouts.
While the fancy workouts are “sexier” they aren’t what make you sexy. Make sense?
I want you to remember that you can totally do this.
This is doable and there are going to be days that you feel like you’re never going to meet your goals and that the crazy coach that you follow on Instagram because you found her on the internet is a quack. But I’m not a quack. 🙂
It’s worked for me, it’s worked for my clients, and for lots of women that I’ve helped all over the country. Keep it simple, mama and stay the course.
And while nobody can ever guarantee results, staying the course will get you so much further than the back and forth of yo-yo dieting and yo-yo workouts.
Results will come, you only have to keep going and keep persevering. And, stick with me. I’ll do my best to take the guess work out of your journey and we’ll knock it out together.
